Since the first electric gramophones, engineers have sought the perfect balance of excellent physical tracking and electronic performance from the phono cartridge. Alan Blumlein is the man who invented stereo, almost 100 years ago. But, he knew when he invented the system that there existed a technical flaw in how stereo operates at high and low frequencies. (In each case, we use two quite different hearing systems to determine directional information.) We call the effect Blumlein Blur. He even invented circuits to correct for it. But he was hamstrung by the technology of his time. The ANU includes advanced, and unique, signal processing to correct for Blumlein Blur.
